Research area
My research focuses on combining metabolomics research with nutritional and clinical intervention studies, aiming to develop novel biomarkers that would enable personalized intervention and disease prevention. During my last years of research, I have been focused in the field of Nutritional Metabolomics and Systems Biology, to elucidate how diet and other environmental factors affect the metabolome in obesity and metabolic syndrome.

As a chemist, I am highly interested in (1) new advances in analytical methodology, especially in the field of mass spectrometry-based metabolomics analytics; and in (2) application of bioinformatic tools for data integration. I am particularly excited about translation of the metabolomics approach into the clinical practice. As a food technologist, I am interested in the identification of those metabolic pathways behind the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis, both in health and in metabolic disorders linked to dietary and lifestyle habits.

I see metabolomics as a potential tool to influence diabetic patient care. I believe that a comprehensive metabolome/lipidome characterization of relevant tissues (such as adipose tissue, liver, and skeletal muscle) at different stages in progression to metabolic disease is currently needed in order to identify and understand the pathways behind the transition point from healthy status to initiation of co-morbidities in those non-communicable diseases, such as type 2 diabetes (T2D), that most affect individuals from both developed and developing countries.

My current research is based on applying a metabolomics systems biology approach in well phenotyped participants of unique clinical studies to elucidate critical pathophysiologic mechanisms and ethiology of obesity and its co-morbidities, which special focus in T2DM and insulin resistance. My main interest is to (1) identify and understand the pathways behind the transition point from health to T2D, and (2) to identify novel circulating biomarkers sensitive to adipose tissue metabolite changes. The final aim is to find out and validate early predictive biomarkers of co-morbidities associated with obesity and T2D for future implementation in clinical diagnostics.
