Risk factors and progression to diabetes
Identification of risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease is essential for developing early prevention strategies. It is well-known that the distribution of obesity and other risk factors for diabetes differ between populations and between subgroups within a population. In addition, the impact of each risk factor on the development of diabetes and cardiovascular disease differs between and within populations.
Using large-scale epidemiological studies, we aim to examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors with the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Particularly, we aim to study the role of different risk factors in:
- The general Danish population
- Subtypes of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes
- Different ethnic groups, incl. the Inuit population
- Different age groups
