Prevention of diabetes

Early prevention of type 2 diabetes is a focus area of the Clinical Epidemiology research group. Large randomised studies have shown that lifestyle modifications can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes among adults at high risk of diabetes. A reduction in diabetes risk can also improve the long-term risk of developing microvascular complications.

Our research group has initiated
  •  A prevention study, the PRE-D Trial, which aims to compare the effectiveness of physical training with that of different types of medication on blood glucose fluctuations and other risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease in individuals with pre-diabetes.
  • Another study our research group is involved in is DEXLIFE. DEXLIFE is an EU funded research project with the overall aim to investigate ways to detect and prevent type 2 diabetes in real-life settings. Part of DEXLIFE involves evaluation of a self-selected lifestyle intervention, which is likely to be more effective than traditional interventions for the prevention of type 2 diabetes.
